The Austin Clark reader is
a compilation of some of Clark's work over the decades, edited by Barry Callaghan. This reader is chock full of delightful
fictional stories, many in a West Indian vernacular, with some racy content.
Below is an exciting samples from this piece.
Breadfruit Cou-Cou
After wunnuh went-church this morning; and come back home, and look in the larder, and didn't see nothing; no left-overs Kentucky-Fry; no tin-salmon; no piece o' pork; not a pullet at the door, and wunnuh can't borrow one, nor thief one offa the n'ighbour, wunnuh think,"Wha' I goin-give this man to eat, now, nuh?" Don't grieve. Mek he breadfruit cou-cou, with beef stew, prickle and pear.
Get a fair size breadfruit with the stem still in: and wash she-off...
Clark goes on to describe the process for this meal in humorous detail the way only Clark can deliver it.
